Abbotsford Townhouse

If you missed my last blog post, I’m giving away one carload pass to this year’s Abbotsford Airshow. It’s a huge event full of fun aviation-related presentations and displays to entertain the whole family.

Valued at $100, the carload pass admits eight people (adults or children) travelling in one vehicle into the event. And, better yet, the onsite parking is free! Visit and like my Facebook page to enter the contest. You’ll also receive an extra entry into the contest by sharing the special Airshow post.

In celebration of Canada’s largest airshow, I’ve compiled a list of interesting facts from the five decades of the Abbotsford Airshow. Enjoy!

  • In February, USA Today listed the Abbotsford Airshow as one of the world’s top ten airshows!
  • You can get the latest news about the Airshow by signing up for their e-newsletter or downloading their app, which is available for iPhone, Blackberry and Android devices.
  • One notable Airshow guest? King Hussein of Jordan. In 1974, he attended the Abbotsford event and later approved the formation of the Royal Jordanian Falcons, an aerobatic team that performed at the Airshow in 1977.
  • In 1973, a CF-101 Voodoo exploded during a four-ship Voodoo display. Both crewmembers were ejected and the remains of the Voodoo landed in a vacant field.
  • The Northwest Council of Airshows awarded “Airshow of the Year” to the Abbotsford Airshow in 2012.
  • This year, the U.S. government’s budget cuts have limited the U.S. military demonstration teams and displays, which means that they won’t be able to attend the event. However, there are a ton of flying and ground displays, including Canadian Forces demonstrations, WWII Warbirds and civilian performers like AV8FX Pyrotechnics, who include explosions and fire in their show!
  • Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau designated the Abbotsford Airshow as Canada’s National Airshow in the mid-1970s.
  • In 1994, the first wedding happened in the then-thirty-three year history of the show. Dan and Loretta Newall got married before the Airshow began. It was nearly impossible to hear their vows because some of the jets took off ahead of schedule.
  • During 50 years of the Airshow’s presentations and displays, there has only been one fatality. In 1969, a pilot from Washington State died when his Mini Mustang gyrated out of control and dove into the ground.
  • Celebrating the Airshow’s 40th anniversary was a huge milestone: In 2002, air shows were threatened by cancellation due to high post-9/11 insurance costs.
  • Average annual attendance of the Airshow? More than 125,000 people! This makes it the largest air show on the west coast of North America.

Don’t forget to get your name in the draw to win a carload pass by visiting and liking my Facebook page! Remember, the winner will be announced on Monday, August 5.
